About Online Banking Multi-Factor Authentication

Collage of money and dollar bills

When you log in to online banking, Royal Credit Union uses secure multi-factor authentication to verify your identity. “Multi-factor” simply means we use more than one method to determine it’s really you. It’s another way we’re working hard to keep your accounts safe and secure.

Even if someone else has your online banking username and password, multi-factor authentication means they wouldn’t be able to access your account without also having access to your phone or email. This is another great time to mention that you should use different passwords for different online accounts. That way even if one account is compromised, the others will still be secure.

How Does Multi-Factor Authentication Work?

After you enter your username and password to log in to Royal’s online banking system, it will ask you to confirm your identity by having a unique code sent to you via text message, email, or a phone call. All you need to do is receive the code and type it in to the Enter Code box to continue the login process.

Can I Bypass Multi-Factor Authentication?

If you regularly sign in to online banking from a trusted personal computer or other device, you can register your device to bypass multi-factor authentication. This option is available from the same screen where you enter the verification code. Just choose “Yes, register my private device.” The next time you sign in from the same device, you won’t be prompted for a verification code. The register option stores a temporary internet file called a cookie on your device, so if you delete your browser’s history or cookies from time to time, you may need to register it again.
